Making quarterly submissions

Making quarterly submissions

For clients meeting the criteria of MTD for Income quarterly submissions declaring their income and expenses for every self-employed or Landlord business must be made in addition to the annual self-assessment tax return.

Clients must be registered directly with HMRC for MTD; they are not automatically enrolled. Once enrolled you must add your client to your MTD management list and check their MTD connection before you can make any quarterly submissions, learn how to add your client here.

Making a quarterly submission

You should ensure the self-employed record keeping is up to date before making the submission.

To review or make a quarterly submission you should first;

  1. Select the ‘Tax Submission’ sections

  2. Then select the current MTD tax year

  3. Select and expand the business from the list

  4. Then select view on the section you wish to submit

If your client has previously had MTD submissions made using another software provider then you will need to select ‘Pull data form HMRC’ this will ensure the previous submission values are reflected on this tax form.

  1. Review the figures generated by Record Keeping

  2. When ready select  ‘Submit to HMRC’

You will see if the submission is successful and the status will turn green and show up to date, the quarters will turn grey while your submission is being processed by HMRC, it may take up to 1hr to complete.

When your client's return has been successfully processed and accepted by HMRC the quarter will turn green and the quarterly submission is complete. You will need to repeat the process of submitting a quarterly return if your client has any allowances and adjustments, another self-employed or Landlord business or if they are part of the construction industry scheme as these all need separate quarterly submissions.
